The sport of volleyball has been enjoyed by Filipinos over the years. It’s constantly been a part of P.E. programs of schools, and it’s always a favorite game during beach outings. When the FIVB brought some international lady players here for a tournament, the Araneta Coliseum was packed. Brazilian volleyball star Leila Barros became an instant “crush ng bayan.” But interestingly, volleyball hasn’t really reached the level of popularity of other staple sports -- like basketball, badminton, or running. But with proper marketing and support – it can be just as popular.
Volleyball did get a big boost in the arm when Shakey’s decided to go all-out and support the sport __ years ago by coming up with the Shakey’s VLeague – a twice a year Volleyball collegiate tournament that happens annually. The Shakey’s VLeague, which features the top lady volleyball players in the country, is the main reason for the growth of volleyball in the country, especially among girls.
Now, Shakey’s, in partnership with SM Supermalls and Crush Communications, Inc. will organize “The Shakey’s VLeague Summer Camp Year 2: “Spike Madness!” – a volleyball summer camp mall tour that kicks-off this coming March 5-7 at SM North Edsa; it will then go to SM Bacolod on March 12-14, SM Baguio on March 19-21, and in SM Megamall on April 5-9. The summer camp is designed for girls 9-14 years old who would like to learn more about one of the most exciting sports in the world.
Shakey’s V-League superstars like, Suzanne Roces, Laurence Ann Latigay, Sasa Devanadera, Michelle Carolino, Gretchen Ho, Mary Jane Pepito and Jinni Mondejar will be among the instructors who are expected to give training sessions to young aspiring “volleybelles.” The camp will be headed by veteran volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb.
The camp will focus on volleyball basic skills like spiking, receiving, blocking, and even stretching. Mall goers will be treated to special volleyball exhibition games. The North Edsa, Baguio and Bacolod legs are open to the public and is also open to Shakey's VLeague Summer Camp Year 2 registrants with a minimum registration fee of Php500 inclusive of a Summer Camp Year 2 Tshirt, snacks for 3 days and 3-day basic training. The April 5 to 9 leg in Megamall is exclusively for Shakey’s VLeague summer camp registrants.
Registrations starts with a minimal fee of P1,500, The fee includes the 5-day training sessions, special edition premium items like: summer camp volley shirt, a duffle bag, a sports bottle, hand towel and snacks good for five day training period.
